4PM Coffee: Troubles With Webhosting

4pm coffee thoughts

Perhaps you might have noticed that there was no 4PM Coffee Thoughts yesterday.

I was busy trying desperately to get this website onto a new hosting provider.

Liquidweb, my previous host, was bought out and my hosting account was migrated around 8:45AM to the new provider.

I should have known something was going to go wrong.

It did.

This site was migrated, yes, but they used an old backup from August 24th, not the September 6th's backup.

As a result, I lost close to 15 posts that I'd done, and the most recent post they had was TGIF: VOEZ Edition!

Talk about incompetance...

As it turned out, I chose ChicagoVPS.net to host this site on a large Virtual Private Server (VPS), and had the site spooled up and online, including all the posts around 10pm last night.

There were two things that slowed me down... a lot.

1) I didn't have a current backup downloaded and saved. The last one, to my horror, was from August 31, so that was no help.

2) Spooling up a brand new VPS takes time.

If there is one thing I learned the hard way was to always make data backups... I mean, I do, but once a week isn't even sufficent for a website like this where I'm writing new posts every day.

Also, make sure you download your backups. I was leaving the backups on the server for the most part, and when they did the migration, the backups were lost!

It's easier to see in hindsight as opposed to doing in the moment.

But if there's anything I've learned, it's to take the extra 20 minutes to create and download a backup every night!

Now I'm a day behind.

I was expecting to have the "one month review" post done that I'd promised you on September 1st, and it's still going to be done... it will be published tonight because a promise is a promise.

Well, I'm going to keep it short here today, and move on to getting that post done. See you tonight!
