4PM Coffee: $5 Subsonic Media Server Edition

I've done a bunch of posts here on 4PM Coffee about the Raspberry Pi builds I've done.

This one isn't any different. I got tired of always having to transfer music to the Raspberry Pi from my computer when I wanted to listen to a new song I'd purchased or something.

The trusty RunePi does a great job for when you're jacked in and right next to it, but what about when you want to go out and take your tunes with you?

Well, most people would have to transfer the music to their phone or portable music player.

TGIF: Coffee Packet Edition

I Just Realized I Am Out Of Coffee.

It's Friday and it's the end of the world. Shut the door. Suck Eggs. Die. TGIF.

Seriously... I am completely out of coffee at work!

I forgot to pick more up on the way to work this morning, and now, I'm staring into the bottom of an empty coffee can.

I realized that I never really showed you guys my music setup at work, even though I refer to it just about every 4PM coffee!

The system runs two Raspberry Pi computers. Both are 512MB Raspberry Pi Model B's and they are connected to the internet via Wi-Fi.

I have RuneAudio on one and the other is just storage for both work and my music/photos/documents. The primary RuneAudio Pi is connected to the secondary Pi's music folder.

Both Pi's have Class 10 Sandisk Extreme (U3) 128GB MicroSD Cards.

The RuneAudio player (I call it "RunePi") has roughly 30GB of music loaded plus 52 internet radio stations.

It's 4PM and Here's My Coffee Thoughts for Wednesday, February 15, 2017

How I'm Feeling:

For the past couple weeks, I've felt a bit unfocused. I've got so many things going on that it's all beginning to come apart at the seams.

I have a bunch of stuff to do at work, but I lack the gumption to really put my heart into it.

I have a ton of reviews to do, but don't really feel like doing that either.

I've spread myself thin on the websites I'm working on. There's four sites that I should be working on and maintaining, but every time I sit down, I really don't feel like working on any of them.

I need to refocus, and that's going to be the next topic that I address on this blog.

It's true... After almost 6 months without a main laptop, I'm finally back in business.

In June of 2016 my main Toshiba P97-A7200 laptop died it's final death (I'd resurrected it about six times previously). The laptop had been good, and lasted me four years of non-stop use.

On Monday, 17-Jan.-2017, My new MSI GP62 Gaming Laptop came in.

4PM Coffee: Higo No Kami Knife Edition

Unless you're a knife collector (or from Japan), you probably have never heard of a Higo No Kami Knife.

Let me give you a bit of backstory:

Motosuke Nagao is the last remaining knife maker in Japan that is licensed by the Japanese Government to make knives in the traditional way that the Samurai Swords used to be created. The knives are created under the family company, Nagao Seisakusho.

He is the last of a long line of celebrated knife and swordsmiths.

When he's gone, it very well could be a fact that the license, and traditional Japanese swordsmithing ways dies with him, and the Higo No Kami knife line ends forever.

4PM Coffee: GTD Edition

It's 4PM and Here's My Coffee Thoughts for Monday, September 19th, 2016

I usually have something to say every day when 4PM rolls around. Today, surprisingly, I don't have much other than just a drive to get things done.

I'm quite busy right now, so I hope that you'll forgive me if today's 4PM Coffee doesn't have much.

I'll see you again tomorrow at 4PM.

4PM Coffee: ChromeBook Edition

It's 4PM And I Really Need This Coffee Break! Seriously.

Well, after 4 years of daily use, thousands of miles of travel, and even a new power switch, I think my main laptop finally has died for good.

This morning when I got to work, it wouldn't power up.

I tore it apart and tried everything under the sun to fix it. I can power it up, boot to the Ubuntu desktop and begin working. At some point while I'm working, the whole computer freezes and gives my a Undefined FIFO Error. I have no choice but to hard restart, losing anything I might have been working on.

4PM Coffee: Raspberry Pi OSMC Media Center

Over the past few days, I've been playing around with the Raspberry Pi 2 and OSMC

OSMC is free media player software that loads into the Raspberry Pi and essentially creates a full media center capable of running movies, TV videos, music, photos and apps.

I already have a Chromecast, and it should be mentioned that we don't pay for standard cable, but the OSMC media center blows Chromecast out of the water as far as the content you have access to.

4PM Coffee: Essential Snack Edition

It's 4PM and time for Coffee Thoughts again!

Today we're looking at essential snacks that should be in your bag or backpack at all times in case you get hungry.

For me, that happens a lot. I don't really eat breakfast, and lunches are usually very light and inexpensive.

I carry a good number of snacks in my bag to carry me over during the work day, and that helps the day to go much better than sitting, trying to work and going hungry.

Here's a list of the snacks that I have in my bag currently:

4PM Coffee: Get To The Point Edition

How many times have you been stuck in a meeting or in a conversation that should have only take a couple minutes, but rather it ran far longer than needed?

I was stuck in a three hour meeting.

A potential vendor came to the offices this morning touting a new peice of software (which cannot be mentioned by name) that could tie all of our video systems together.

The actual sales pitch really only took about 45 minutes, and the demo was the other 15. The other two hours were wasted on "what if's".

What if we did this... What if you gave us that... All hypothetcals.

I realized that I needed to make another change in my life.

TGIF: I Failed Edition

I Failed.

I had promised to get my August Report out by the 8th, but it didn't happen.

I feel bad that it didn't happen, but you know what? It's ok because I know I did everything in my power to make it happen, and forces beyond my control played a cruel game against me.

4PM Coffee: Troubles With Webhosting

Perhaps you might have noticed that there was no 4PM Coffee Thoughts yesterday.

I was busy trying desperately to get this website onto a new hosting provider.

Liquidweb, my previous host, was bought out and my hosting account was migrated around 8:45AM to the new provider.

I should have known something was going to go wrong.

It did.

4PM Coffee: Raspberry Pi Music Edition

It's 4PM Coffee Time after a Long Weekend!

First of all, spending an overnight in a non-air conditioned house isn't fun.

From Sunday to Monday, we'd spent time with family, but the house we stayed in... well, I guess they didn't believe in using AC. Props to them for saving money, but I was miserable.

Sitting around dripping in your own sweat wasn't fun.

TGIF: Urgent Care Edition

I’d only fallen asleep around 1:30, and less than 45 minutes later, my wife woke me up in somewhat of a panic that our daughter needed urgent attention.

The side of her face was puffy, and she been in a lot of discomfort.

My wife said she probably would need to go into urgent care, and that I would need to take her because she had to stay home with our sons that were still sleeping like rocks.

What's Going On: It's a new month and some really cool things are in the works!

It's Thursday and a new month, and I've got a bunch of things in the works over the next couple weeks.

Looking to do quite a few more reviews on some of the items I own and have coming in.

Along with the reviews, I'm working on a one month post -- a review of my first month in Lifestyle Design.

4PM Coffee Thoughts: 3 Hours Of Sleep

What's On My Mind:
How To Function On 3 Hours Of Sleep A Night

One of the things that's changed in a big way since I started the Journey in Lifestyle Design is my sleep habits.

I realized that in order to be successful and get the things you want out of life, you're going to need more time to get the things that need to be done finished.

For most people who have a 9 to 5 and family, like myself, there's only one time during a 24 hour period that you can get this time from:

I'm really excited about a new purchase I've just made. Many of you know I'm a bit of an audiophile, and my quest for good sound just got another addition.

The TFZ Series 1S Earbuds are single driver, dual chamber earbuds that have received a lot of good reviews since Massdrop began offering them.

4PM Coffee Thoughts: How To Crush A Meeting

If you have to have a project proposal meeting, might as well rock everyone's world.

When you schedule a meeting, the goal is to get 80% or more attendance. Don't worry if a couple people can't make it. Chances are that they're not important anyway.

Your goal is to just get three types of people in the meeting:
